About that Name...
One of the challenges in starting any business is, of course, selecting a name. It should be distinctive, yet descriptive. Anyone who has been down this road will appreciate the mind-numbing process that it can be. The only people more deserving of sympathy than the business owner facing this challenge are the family members and friends that are inevitably subjected to endless questions about one name after another.
We knew "REIT" had to be in the name, and we included "Services" to emphasize our client service focus. The challenge was now down to the initial word. In the end, we found the answer was not a word at all but a reference taken from the Internal Revenue Code. This part seemed particularly appropriate since the Internal Revenue Code created the fundamental reason for the business: Section 856 provides the 100-shareholder ownership requirement for a REIT, but "856 REIT Services" did not have much personality. With so many requirements for REIT qualification, Congress subdivided Section 856 and placed the 100-shareholder provision in subsection (a)(5). A5 REIT Services seemed to fit the bill -- or so we decided when decision time had arrived. |
